Differentiation is the practice responding to the readiness, interests and learning profiles of each student, supported by Tomlinson and Jarvis (2009). Sousa and Tomlinson (2011) quote readiness as ‘…an individual’s current proximity to, or proficiency with, a specific set of knowledge, understanding and skills designated as essential to a particular segment of study.’

The term inclusion is a set of practices that is all-embracing to engage participation, learning and a sense of belonging, supported by Ainscow (2009) who suggests inclusion is about presences, participation, progress, achievement and learning.
As a pre-service teacher, teaching to differentiate I
- assess the students’ readiness by determining if the student has the existing and specific understanding and skills for new learning
- determine the appropriate challenge to allow the students to have a positive learning experience
- allow the student to be placed in a learning environment that is not too hard or too easy
- tailor new tasks to the students’ interest to maintain engagement which is done through creating a positive student-teacher relationship
- determining students’ individual learning profiles through discussions 1:1 and through assessment
- deliver content in numerous ways to cater for learning profiles
- conduct peer and individual learning

Teaching for diverse learners is the practice of creating a positive learning space where individuals with disabilities, special needs and all students learn in a cohesive and non-segregated environment. This definition supports the Disability Standards for Education 2005, as the Australian Government has implemented funning to the Inclusion Support Programme (ISP). The implementation and the practice of differentiation and inclusion enables me to have the skills and understanding to be a teacher of diverse learners.
